hamish

Programme Director for BA (Hons) Photography in the Arts. Awarded a doctorate for his practice-based PhD in 2013, Hamish’s research draws on ideas surrounding photography, family and melancholia. His work has been exhibited widely, most notably in Apron, a solo exhibition at Mission Gallery, Swansea and at Diffusion International Festival of Photography, Cardiff. He has been selected several times for the National Eisteddfod of Wales Fine Art Pavilion and has had work exhibited at venues including Britart Gallery, London; Alsager Arts Centre, Manchester and Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea.

paul

Paul Duerinckx is a senior lecturer and Programme Director for the BA (Hons) Photojournalism degree. His practice is based primarily on social documentary photography. He has worked for various editorial clients including The Daily Telegraph, Express Saturday and Nursing Times, for corporate clients and as a stills and portrait photographer for television companies.

From 2004-5 he was the project manager and a photographer for The Final Season, a documentation of Swansea City AFC’s final season at their long-established home ground, The Vetch Field. This resulted in the book, The Final Season and an exhibition at Swansea’s Glynn Vivian Gallery in 2005. His work also featured in the group publication and exhibition Unreliable Truths (Glynn Vivian, 2008). More recently, his portraits and studio images of illustrators were published in the book, Making Great Illustration (A&C Black 2011). Portraits from this series were exhibited at the Peninsular Gallery in Plymouth (2012).

A current commission, the Book project, a response to the Glynn Vivian Gallery during its current closure and refurbishment, is due for publication in 2014 and his work was recently exhibited as part of Diffusion, Cardiff’s international photography festival.

John Paul Evans is a Senior Lecturer in Photography. His work explores the polemics of representing the male figure within a patriarchal context. He has exhibited nationally and internationally. Solo exhibitions include Bed Sheet Dreams 2005 ‘The Room Gallery’ London. A Different Point of View 1999, CBAT Cardiff & MAC centre Birmingham, Dark Secrets…Mortal Thoughts 1997, a touring exhibition commissioned by Newport Museum & Art Gallery, and Hunks & Heroes 1996, Castlefield Gallery Manchester. Selected group shows include Unreliable Truths 2008, The Glynn Vivian Gallery, Sitting Room 2007-8, and Barbarella 1998-9, touring exhibition for Kent Council. Selected publications include;  Male Bodies by Emmanuel Cooper, 2004; Art Tomorrow by Edward Lucie-Smith, 2003; Fully Exposed by Emmanuel Cooper, 1995.

Reader in Art & Science Interactions and post-graduate research supervisor, Karen also contributes to the undergraduate photography programmes. Awarded a Doctorate in 2006 with research into historical and contemporary arts and science collaborations in the anatomical theatre, Karen currently runs a number of research initiatives at Swansea including the Centre for Lens-Arts and Science Interaction. Practice is in lens-based arts and she also acts as an artist, theorist and curator. Karen’s work has been exhibited internationally and published widely. Publications include Death’s Witness (2001), Anatomy Lessons (2004), Seeds of Memory (2006), Narrative Remains (2009) and Wonder Chamber (2012).

Lecturer in Photography. Holly is a lens- based artist working with ideas surrounding memory, architecture and space. Since graduating Goldsmiths College in 1998, Holly has exhibited both nationally and internationally throughout Britain and aboard, including New York, Belgium and France. Recent works include a large – scale photographic work called Nothing Is What It Is Because Everything Is What It Isn’t, at The National Museum Wales, Cardiff, 2013; The Truth Is I Never Left You , URRA International Artist Residency, 2012; and she was the recipient of a Creative Wales Award in 2011.

Eva Bartussek is a lecturer in Photography. Her own documentary practice encompasses commercial and reportage commissions in the UK and abroad as well as a personal interest in portraiture. In 2011, she won the Photography Award at Welsh Artist of the Year. Her solo show Horse House toured the UK in 2009/2010 and in 2012 her work was included in A Gallery of One’s Own, an exhibition at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. She is currently completing work on a practice-based PhD.

Lecturer in Photography and Contextual Studies. Ryan is a photographic artist whose research explores themes surrounding photography, time & disorder. Since graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art in 2013, Ryan has published artist books and exhibited in group and solo exhibitionsboth nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include, Latency Principles, Gothenburg, Sweden (2013), Room & Book, ICA, London (2014) and Deviated Light, Ffotogallery, Wales (2014).

Sarah Tierney is a Technical Demonstrator, her area of expertise is with digital imagery and outputting digital prints, which have been exhibited for other photographers and her own work, as far as India, China and for the excellent end of year shows for the 3rd students exhibiting in London. Her most recent work, Pinhole-memories was shown in Jaipur and Deli, India in 2013. She also works very closely with community groups offering workshops in photography, both traditional and digital. At present she is working towards an MPhil exploring narrative through the lens and fictional characters interwoven in the history timeline of photography.

Christine works as a Photography Technician Demonstrator. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Photography in the Arts in 2006 from Swansea and is currently working towards an MA in Photography, creating work based around the notions of time and memory. On-going photographic practice involves exploring the intricacies of theatrical photography, working with both professional and local youth companies. Her work has been shown at the National Eisteddfod in 2006 and at the Oriel Davies Gallery, Powys.
